Kribi Deep Sea Port has grown from an interesting alternative into a serious call option for larger vessels on the Cameroon coast. For fleet managers and superintendents currently defaulting to Douala, it is worth understanding what Kribi changes — and what it does not.
What Kribi changes
Draft. Kribi offers deeper water than Douala's channel-restricted approach. Vessels that are constrained on draft into Douala can call Kribi loaded, without the two-stage lighterage that used to be the workaround.
Container throughput. The container terminal at Kribi is expanding both quay length and yard capacity. For container operators, transhipment options via Kribi are becoming competitive with regional hubs.
Hinterland access. Road links inland are improving. Bulk operators serving the Cameroon interior can consider Kribi as a working alternative to Douala for some cargoes.
What Kribi does not change
Vessel support ecosystem. The chandling and repair supplier base at Kribi is still developing. A Douala-based supplier that will not travel is not much use to you at Kribi.
Emergency response speed. For unplanned repairs, distance from the established supplier base in Douala matters. Any Kribi call should be planned with the shore-side response time understood in advance.
Bonded and customs practice. Cameroon customs procedures are consistent across ports, but each port has its own operational quirks. Local knowledge at Kribi is thinner and takes longer to source.
