Calling Douala for the first time? The 5 delays every Master hits — and how to avoid them
A first-call Douala arrival guide, distilled from the questions we field every week from Masters and superintendents new to the port.

A short field guide for Masters and superintendents whose vessel is calling Douala for the first time. Skips the tourist advice; keeps the delays.
Delay 1: the anchorage wait
Douala's approach channel and pilotage window is tide-restricted. First-call vessels regularly underestimate the anchorage wait and arrive with too little bunker margin or provisions margin. Confirm the tide window and pilot ETA with your agent 48 hours before arrival, and provision for at least 24 hours' extra anchorage.
Delay 2: the paperwork triple-check
Three parallel authorities need paperwork on arrival: port authority, customs and immigration. Any single missing form — arrival notification, crew list, stores declaration, garbage record — is enough to hold clearance. Ask your agent to send the arrival document pack at least a week ahead so nothing surfaces at the gangway.
Delay 3: bonded stores at the gate
Bonded stores clearance follows a specific document sequence (see our earlier post on this). A first-call chandler unfamiliar with Douala customs is the single biggest source of delayed bonded delivery. Ask the chandler up front how they handle bonded pre-clearance.
Delay 4: the launch window at anchorage
If your delivery is at anchorage, launch availability is finite and weather-sensitive. A confirmed launch is not the same as an arrived launch. Build a two-hour buffer into your delivery window if you are relying on a launch transfer.
Delay 5: repair mobilisation on first-call notice
A repair scope communicated at arrival, rather than 48 hours ahead, will not close alongside — unless the contractor already keeps trades and consumables ready. Send any repair scope as soon as it is known, not on arrival.
The one-page checklist
We keep a one-page first-call Douala checklist that covers all five delays with the specific documents, timings and contacts. Message us on WhatsApp and we will send it — no gating.
The one thing every Master says after their first call
"I wish someone had told me all of this in one document before we arrived." Consider this the document.
