In-situ machining: the jobs you didn't know could be done alongside
Line boring, flange facing, seat lapping — the machining jobs most superintendents assume need a yard, that in fact close in a port stay.

A significant portion of the machining work that historically forced a drydock booking can now be done in-situ, alongside, with portable machining equipment. If it is on your list and it has been waiting for a yard slot, it is worth a second look.
What we do in-situ
Line boring. Rudder trunk, stern tube, pintle bore restoration — with portable line-boring bars sized for the diameter and length involved. Alongside or afloat at anchorage.
Flange facing. Large-diameter flange faces, particularly on exhaust and sea water systems, refaced in place. Faster and cheaper than removal, shipment to a shop, and refit.
Seat lapping. Valve seats, particularly on larger cargo and ballast valves, lapped in situ to restore the seal without disturbing the body.
Milling and drilling. Local milling for pad restoration, drilling for hold-down bolt renewals, keyway repairs.
What still needs a yard
Anything requiring the vessel to be dry — underwater hull, tail-shaft withdrawal below the waterline, rudder-bearing renewal in most cases. Anything on the main engine crankshaft that is not within the reach of portable equipment.
The commercial logic
An in-situ machining job that closes over a normal port stay avoids the diversion, the drydock booking, the yard rate and the schedule disruption. On the arithmetic, this often turns a job from an insurance-driven yard visit into a routine port-call scope.
What has to be right
Operator experience with the specific equipment. Setup and datuming discipline (the accuracy of the final job depends on the setup, not the machine). QA sign-off with dimensional records before the equipment leaves the vessel. Class attendance where the tolerance affects certification.
