Riding teams explained: maintenance without port time on Gulf of Guinea rotations
When port time is the constraint, riding teams are the answer. What they do, what they cost, and what makes them worth it.

A riding team is a small maintenance crew that boards the vessel and sails with it, working through a defined scope of maintenance while the vessel is on passage. On Gulf of Guinea rotations, where port stays are short and diversions expensive, they are often the most efficient way to close a defect list.
What a riding team actually does
Routine maintenance the crew does not have time for: descaling, painting, valve overhauls, packing changes, minor piping renewals, watertight integrity checks, coating touch-ups. Complex jobs where a specialist is needed for a few days but not a full port stay.
What they do not do
Anything requiring class attendance in real time. Anything requiring hot work in restricted zones without a permit system agreed in advance. Anything the vessel's crew is not equipped to supervise.
The commercial logic
A riding team of three joining at Douala and disembarking at the next West African call — say seven to fourteen days — can close a defect list that would otherwise absorb two full port stays. On a trade running at USD 15k+ per day of hire, avoiding one port stay pays for the team several times over.
What you have to get right
Selection. Trades matched to the scope. A team that is all welders when the scope needs a pipefitter and a machinist will not close the list.
Boarding. Visa, medicals, PPE, boarding letter to the Master. If any of these is fumbled, you lose two days at the joining port.
Scope discipline. Agree the scope in writing before the team boards. Scope creep on a riding contract kills margins on both sides.
Handover. A daily brief with the Chief Engineer, a signed job card per completed task, and a final acceptance pack on disembarkation.
Where we deploy them
OptiFresh riding teams operate on West African rotations out of Douala. Two to five crew depending on scope, trades to your specification, with the paperwork discipline of a shore-based repair. If you have a maintenance list that will not fit into a normal port stay, send us the scope. We will quote a team, a duration, and a schedule for boarding at your next Douala call.
